Outdoor Spaces

Outdoor Space Planning

Thursday, March 02, 2017

Gone are the days where the average Aussie backyard was a clothesline, a vegie patch and maybe, if you were lucky, a home-made cricket pitch!

Now Australian families are looking at ways to integrate their daily living with the outdoors – the need and want to utilise their surrounds all year round with outdoor structures that can service family & friends all year.

Once upon a time you needed a big chunk of land (and an even bigger budget) to be able to build a pool. It’s now very achievable to have a pool in your backyard with all sizes of land and budgets catered to. Once families have started looking at their outdoor spaces they start to ask themselves questions like; what do we want to achieve in this space? Who are we wanting to achieve this for, and what look are we wanting?

With outdoor spaces, you are only limited to your imagination and budget. It could be as simple as small covered pergola to a sumptuous, retreat-style pool house with all of the modern conveniences such as bathroom/shower, wet bar, lounge area etc. It ensures outdoor living can be achieved all year and adds value to your home as an extra living space.

Parents of teenagers will agree – when your kids want their friends over they come over in packs and just like a pack, they can/do take over your entire house very quickly! Imagine having that rec room outside where they can hang out playing their games, listening to their music, sleep over – all within the security & safety of your own property but without the intrusion to the rest of the family!

With an individually designed pool house your backyard becomes your own tropical oasis resort – fully tiled to ensure easy cleaning, a bathroom which enables everyone to stay outside whilst using the pool, cupboard space for clean towels, sunscreen, hats & bbq utensils, a wet bar to ensure your guests are catered for and a lounge area styled with performance fabrics, floor rugs and décor to suit your style. Clever use of space, and with convertible furniture such as sofa beds you can turn your pool house into a space that can accommodate family and friends when they just can’t bear to leave after a visit and want to stay over! If you’ve got the space why not create a beautiful deck in front of your pool house where at the end of the day, everyone retires to have a bbq dinner. Put up a gorgeous umbrella on the deck and you have a space that can be used all day. It’s your very own resort!

Another utilisation of our outdoors is the ‘mums’ cave’. The boys have had their ‘man caves’ for years now, converting garages and sheds into their own zone where they can relax, surrounded by things they enjoy (and let’s face it, may not be able to decorate the main house with!) but now the ladies have started considering their own spaces. Imagine having a space with a big comfy chair, a gorgeous mohair throw (that you would never consider around the kids and the animals in the main home!), big fluffy (dare I say it, white?!) cushions where you can snuggle up to a book or a movie, uninterrupted, even for just a little while. Fresh flowers, your music (you’ve listened to everyone else’s playlist in the car for far too long!) and your time. You deserve it!

Of course, a little of each of these spaces can be incorporated to make one space the entire family can enjoy together – it’s all about thoughtful planning, clever design and functional usage of space. At Todd Devine Homes we are all about creating, ‘the right home, the right time’ and we are proud to help our clients create their dreams and future family memories. We have a passionate & talented team who will ensure your outdoor living space will become a feature for your home & lifestyle for many years to come.

How to Find Your Inspiration in Home Decorating

Thursday, March 02, 2017

Whether you’re just starting out, renovating your existing home, building your dream home or moving houses, there comes a time when you want to look at redecorating and sometimes, finding inspiration is easier said than done.

You know what you like, you just don’t know how to put it together – and more often than not, hitting the stores without a plan is a recipe for disaster. You end up with a lot of items, none of which enhance each other let alone your space, and you give up. Don’t resign yourself to living with the ‘meh’ when you can live with ‘wow’. You just need to know how to achieve the look you want!

Most of us don’t have the budget for an interior stylist at our beck and call but there are many ways to get the style that interiors professional provides without the price tag. You just have to go about things a little differently!

From the moment, we open our eyes we are constantly craving things around us that are visually appealing – colours, patterns, textures & shapes form the basis of what we like and how we feel in regards to everything. How many times have you baulked at a food because of the colour, not even knowing what it’s going to taste like (think kids with anything green) purely because you don’t like the look of it? Now let’s turn that finely tuned mechanism of knowing what inspires us to decorating!

Start off by looking at what is already around you – what do you surround yourself with? What makes you smile? What sights evoke positive memories? Can you identify a consistent colour, theme, style? Sometimes, after taking a look at their surroundings people can have that ‘ah-ha’ moment and that gives them the information and inspiration to move forward. Others need a little more help and that’s where mood boards come into play. Mood boards have been around for years but the internet and namely ‘Pinterest’ it’s never been easier (and cheaper…it’s free!) to create your own mood board which you can take with you anywhere on your smart phone.

Start by putting together colours that you like – you can search by colour on Pinterest and then just pick what you love. Photos of rooms you like, places you’ve stayed, anything that engages and inspires you. After you start collecting these pictures you’ll start to see a theme – whether that be in the colour scheme or in the styling a theme will emerge – or maybe even two themes and that’s fine. This will form the base of where you’re going. Now a while ago you may have taken this information and gone out shopping alone without a clue of how to make it ‘marry’. Now you can walk into a lot of shops, whether it be a furniture store or a bathroom retailer and you will either be able to speak with someone with an interiors background or will be able to make an appointment with one – and the majority of retailers will provide this service free of charge. If they don’t – ask them if they will deduct the cost from the products you will buy from them.

At Todd Devine Homes, not only do we offer a multitude of floorplans, designs & facades to reflect your needs, we have our very own Interior Stylist who can ensure your colour selection process is respectful of your style and needs and encapsulates everything you’re wanting to achieve. Whether you are looking for a holiday park cabin for holidays, a transportable home or a granny flat for family let us help you create the right home, the right time.

Transportable Home Prep | Splitting the Home Ready for Transport

Thursday, October 15, 2015

Our construction yard in Lang Lang, Victoria, is where the magic of constructing transportable homes happens.

The homes get built as one then split just prior to transport. Once transported to site, the sections are put back together and remaining works are completed such as floors coverings.

In this short video, we can see the first step of splitting The Nicholson, a triple wide transportable home.

It all begins with separating the entertaining deck from the house. Enjoy!

Friday, February 13, 2015

As we get settled back into the swing of things in our fourth week back from the Christmas/New Year break, I thought we should begin with a quick recap of some of the highlights of 2014.

2014 saw some big changes for Todd Devine Homes including a complete re-design of the company branding, incorporating a fresh, vibrant & modern feel.

Our display homes also got the royal treatment with a freshen up inside and out!

Todd Devine Homes With New Look
Don’t they look gorgeous? They’re even better in person…definitely worth a visit!

2014 also saw a lot of personal milestones within our team too…

Jason, our Lifestyle Communities Lyndarum Site Supervisor, got married and welcomed his first child Koah. James, our in-house designer, finally proposed to Laura, and they are both currently experiencing the joys of renovating their home. Scott and his wife Alison, welcomed a beautiful boy Angus to their growing family. And I took part in Run Melbourne, my first 10km fun run, which I can neither confirm nor deny that I may have walked most of the way! :P
Congrats to everyone on their achievements! Kickin’ goals all round!!

We had so much fun throughout 2014 so you may be surprised that we also managed to build a few things along the way too…

Turn Blue This September

Turn Blue This September

Thursday, October 02, 2014

Did you know Australia has the highest rate of prostate cancer in the developed world?

Or that more than 50,000 men are diagnosed with some form of cancer and nearly 22,000 die from cancer each year?

These statistics are horrifying.

But what’s more alarming is that at least one in three of these cases is preventable.

Simple lifestyle changes could potentially save thousands of lives, such as reducing alcohol intake, getting regular exercise, eating a balanced diet, and quitting smoking.

Even just knowing the symptoms of cancer, such as a lump, a nagging cough or unexplained weight loss, can be life-saving as you can detect the disease early on and have a better chance at survival.

That’s why this September, my team at Todd Devine Homes and I will be helping to shine the light on men’s cancer and Blue September – Fighting cancer in men.

Blue September is a nationwide campaign that drives awareness for all cancers that affect men – not just prostate and testicular cancer, but also bowel, lung, liver, pancreatic and other cancers, and raises vital funds for Australian Prostate Cancer Research and the Australian Cancer Research Foundation.

To help raise awareness and funds for this fantastic organisation, I have put my team to the task of raising $5,000 for Blue September. If they can complete this mission by 11:59pm Monday 29th September 2014, I will let them turn me BLUE for an entire day! Blue face paint, blue hair, you name it!

So if like them you’d love to see me looking like a Smurf for a day, help us make a difference by donating via our Supporter Pageand help spread awareness for men’s cancer and Blue September – Fighting cancer in men.

The more the word gets out there, the more we can help to reduce these horrifying statistics by encouraging regular health checks and better lifestyle choices.

I know I for one will be heading to the doc’s this month for a check-up. Will you?

Understanding Contrast

Timber Floors - Exploring Contrast

Thursday, October 02, 2014

Today we keep exploring contrast and the way we use it to create depth

Colour plays a huge part with setting the mood in your home. White, grey and pale blues are among the best bedroom colours for a clean, pristine restful bedroom.

You have probably heard the saying 'Dark colours will draw in a room'.

Not necessarily.

Dark colours can also create depth and a sense of comfort. Choosing a dark carpet, for example charcoal, then pairing it with a neutral wall colour gives you the perception of depth and a calming effect.

The product we are introducing this week is the Arrow Sun Barrington Timber Range.

The Barrington is an engineered Timber floor and harvested from Barrington near Gloucester, New South Wales. They supply a beautiful range from deep Jarrah to the softness of spotted gum.

The appeal of the Barrington Range comes from the life time structural warranty they offer and an exclusive 20 year wear warranty.

For more information on this product or to see the amazing colours and textures this range has to offer, visit Russell James Carpets at 1/5 Vesper Drive, Narre Warren, Victoria, 3805 or call (03) 9796  6629.
